ALMIGHTY has been working to shape the future of the society into an environmenstally sound and sustainable one. To make this more effective and meaningful, programmes are conducted in the form of workshops/seminars and followed up with extensive interactive campaigns with school children & teachers. We have been conducting orientation capsules on various topics for the educators so that they compliment the efforts to influence the minds of the future generation. In furtherance of these objectives the various projects being undertaken by “ALMIGHTY” are:
At ALMIGHTY, we follow the slogan of “Green The Minds For A Sustainable Society” in order to shape the future into an environmentally sound and sustainable one. We firmly believe that if the only way to achieve our goals of sensitizing society towards preservation and conservation of the environment is by reaching to the masses and making them a part of our efforts. Towards this end we have launched and are vigorously implementing “Project Green Mind”.
Project “Green Mind” is an initiative by ALMIGHTY where the participants take the pledge to save the Mother Earth from destruction. Under this project, a team of experts has been visiting and interacting with students of various schools on regular basis. Students have been actively participating in various workshops, seminars, programmes, etc organized by us. Not only the students but their teachers have also come forth in order to conserve and protect our very fragile environment.
As part of the project, ALMIGHTY is conducting action programmes in Schools, Colleges and Universities by organizing environment related activities including environmental education, pollution monitoring and control, natural resource conservation, disaster mitigation education, conference organization, production of audio-video instructional materials about environment with a view to have a cleaner as well as greener India.
One day a tree asked another tree, “Why are you looking so tired?” “Are you getting old now?” The tree replied, “No, I am not getting old, but the hands that once planted me are now responsible for my worsening condition today.”
This is the sad story of not only one tree, but thousands and thousands of trees, plants, flowers who have the same depressing tale to narrate. Today, mother earth is reeling under the cruelty of increasing pollution which has been ruining the luxury of the environment. In an effort to give life to and bring a smile on the face of every plant, ALMIGHTY has stepped forward with the idea of this project which has been a huge success.
Objectives
The major objectives of this project are as follows:
ALMIGHTY is concentrating its efforts on the children and teachers as we believe that the school teachers are effective catalysts in shaping the minds of children during their formative years and make them realize the importance of having a clean and green environment around them (The effect of Bazigar Basti in Malerkotla and its effect on non-usage of crackers during Diwali and colours during Holi are a recent example) and make them aware of their strength in bringing about the change in the mindsets of people for a clean and green environment. Each Teacher so trained is expected to influence the minds of at least 40-50 students in his/her sphere of influence , who in turn would be Didactics to influence the thinking and actions of their families about environment, thereby setting in motion student based mini environmental revolution for conservation of natural resources and to have cleaner and greener surroundings.
The teachers are trained to monitor the awareness process, special emphasis being given to their role in sensitizing the minds of the children. This is done with the help of literature and posters, highlighting the topics and how the ills associated with the issue can be stopped. We have been conducting various activity based presentations on many issues of deep concern such as Environmental Protection And Conservation, Global Warming, Climate Change, Energy Conservation, Solid Waste Management, Sustainable Development, Impact Of Environment On The Health Of People And Environmental Upkeep, etc. Other than these activities, many painting, slogan writing, and debate competitions have also been organized for children in order to sensitize them about the environment and all its related facets.
Methods Being Used
ALMIGHTY organizes talks/lectures/presentations/interactive sessions by experts and learned personalities in related fields in the schools at regular intervals so as to sensitize the children and teachers about the prevailing environmental scenario.
“ALMIGHTY” has been holding seminars/workshops/Symposiums with the main theme as related to the chosen subjects and many related sub themes for the school children and the teachers. They are encouraged to participate and come out with solutions for the problems. The aim is to set in motion a “MASS REVOLUTION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL CARE, PROTECTION AND MANAGEMENT, SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT ENERGY & FRESH WATER MANAGEMENT AND CONSERVATION” at the level of the children duly aided by their teachers.
What the children think, they act on it. It is with this basic understanding that we at “ALMIGHTY” aim and organize various competitions viz Painting, Poster Making, Essay Writing, Slogan Writing, Quiz, Debates etc so that the children are made to think about and express themselves about the current environmental situation. We aim at stimulating the minds of children to think, feel, act and propagate about the importance of having a cleaner and greener environment in all spheres of our lives. “ALMIGHTY” regularly conducts competitions, wherein the children are given encouragement in the form of gifts, certificates etc.
We have been teaching and spreading awareness amongst the children and their teachers about the various techniques, methods and the benefits of Energy & Fresh water conservation, Energy & water auditing at school and home. We have also developed and been distributing suitable literature pitched at the level of the children on these topics. The supervisory role that the teachers can play in this is also stressed upon by way of interactive sessions with the teaching fraternity.
Specially compiled, edited and pitched at their level of understanding, the literature covers almost all facets concerned with and connected to the subjects with the aim that the same may be used by the children and the teachers as reference material at a later stage. Adequate articles, pictorial representations and tips about environmental care & protection, Energy & Fresh water conservation and management, Rain water harvesting and Solid Waste Management are covered.
We teach the children various methods and techniques of solid waste management like vermicomposting, Recycling of products etc, by encouraging their active participation in such activities.
ALMIGHTY has arranged to screen appropriate films highlighting various environmental issues for the school children. We also arrange puppet shows to catch the fancy and attention of the young children to convey the message of environmental care and protection.
A few visits to place like recycling units, Industries which have adopted Pollution control strategies, some model Institutes working in the field of environmental care, Places with rain water harvesting units are organized to give the children an exposure to these facets of environmental care and management.
During the period of monsoons, “ALMIGHTY” has been organizing fruit tree plantation drive in and around the educational institutions and in areas provided to us by civic agencies. With every programme and function conducted, the family of Almighty has increased. Till date, we have trained 7800 teachers and over 1, 50,000 children of various schools all over the nation. It is not only the students and teachers, the parents; grandparents have also enthusiastically joined Almighty in fulfilling the aim of conservation of environment.
A famous poet and writer once said, “The task of the excellent teacher is to stimulate "apparently ordinary" people to unusual effort. The tough problem is not in identifying winners: it is in making winners out of ordinary people.”
Keeping this thought in mind and spirit in heart, we have decided to train those master minds who further spread their knowledge and education among others. Teachers and educators are trained by us on several environmental protection and conservation issues. To achieve this purpose and impart training, we have been conducting workshops, seminars, training sessions and practical outdoor sessions for the teachers.
William Wordsworth, a poet and lover of nature, said, “Child is the Father of man.” A child is a mirror of his parent’s activities. Hence, we decided to handover the baton of environmental awareness in the hands of the children.
Children have always played a vital, active and inspiring role in all the activities of ALMIGHTY. Over the years, our teams have been visiting schools and educational institutions in various parts of the country to include Delhi, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh and have held various training programmes for the children and the teachers.

ENERGY CONSERVATION SEMINAR
On the eve of National Energy Conservation Day 2011, “ALMIGHTY” conducted a seminar on Energy Conservation on 13th December 2011 at PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Chandigarh, with the theme “Energy Conservation – Role of Educational Institutions”. The seminar was attended by 200 educators from various schools and colleges of the tricity.
Eminent luminaries from PEDA and PCRA gave presentations to cover various topics related to the theme. In his address to the educators Sh V K Singh exhorted the teaching community to contribute effectively in the drive for energy conservation. He emphasized the need for the educators to be stake holders in this campaign and reinforce the habit of conservation of the very finite resources of non renewable energy. Highlighting the need for energy conservation, he lauded the efforts being made by ALMIGHTY in bringing about awareness in this regard.
During the seminar, experts opined that energy is the lifeblood of the human existence, be it in any form like petroleum products or electricity. It would not be out of place to say that it is one of the most precious resources today. The per capita consumption in our country is still quite low as compared to the highly industrialized countries like the US or energy surplus countries like Russia and Kazakhstan, but thanks to our huge population and increasing personalized mode of mobility and industrial activity, India is the 5th largest user of commercial energy in the world. Unfortunately, a large portion of energy is wasted – not willfully but due to lack of awareness amongst the masses. By taking proper care and adoption of good operational practices, energy waste can be minimized and efficiency increased. For this the basic attitude of people needs to change.
Setting the tone for the seminar, Mr. Muhammad Ashraf, Director ALMIGHTY said that “Charity begins at home” and what could be a better place to begin creating awareness on the state of energy conservation than at home and at school. Energy conservation is aimed at achieving multiple objectives of conserving environment and saving public investment. In other words, energy saved means energy produced. At present, energy efficiency along with its conservation will be the cornerstone of the nation's sustainable development which will also play a key role in advancing national energy security. In fact, it is not just limited to the government but to every citizen of the country. It is, therefore, necessary for all of us to come together and address the issue as a mass movement. She highlighted that by conserving energy we also lower the amount of pollutants we release into the atmosphere and thereby help conserve the environment too. In her presentation she stressed that Energy conservation is an objective to which all the citizen in the country can contribute. Whether a household, school, institution or a factory, a small shop or a large commercial building, a farmer or a office worker, every user and producer of energy can and must make this effort for his own benefit, as well as that of the nation.
Stating that in this context creating public awareness becomes a matter of primary importance, she said that definitely in this case - knowledge is power! The habit of conservation is best introduced and inculcated at the school age. Children, it has been seen, are the best agents of change and in this case we need to equip them with the information and knowledge on energy conservation. An exposure to talks on energy conservation by teachers, once in a while, would go a long way in spreading the message of energy conservation throughout the country through the medium of the children.
Speaking on the occasion the learned speakers stressed that no doubt, there is a huge scope of energy conservation in India. According to studies on energy savings, there is potential of about 25 percent energy savings in our country. Alternative forms of energy are once again being considered, building codes are slowly incorporating energy saving requirements. However, if we do not find a way to educate the public about energy conservation and what they can do as individuals and as communities to help, all the effort by scientists will go waste. Energy conservation education is paramount to all of our sustainable goals for the future. Sh. Javed Akhtar , Jt Director PEDA, in his presentation to the educators highlighted the various options available to the citizens to install roof top solar panels for electricity generation in the region. He said the Govt has taken a number of initiatives and we as citizens must make full use of the various schemes of the government. He made a powerful appeal to the teachers to stress on the use of energy sources like solar energy.
The audience was enthralled by the lucid presentation by Shri Rajender Kumar from PCRA on the facts associated with usage of LPG and gave a number of interesting tips to make the EVER GETTING COSTLIER gas cylinder last longer. He stressed on the need for car pooling and use of public transport to reduce the usage of the petroleum products.
Focusing on these important issue of awareness, ALMIGHTY has been working over the past on Energy Conservation encompassing not just schools and school children but different segments of the society. The programme ended with all the delegates and participants taking a pledge to conserve energy in whatever way they can and they will also motivate and ensure that all other people in their sphere of influence follow their example.
UNNATI
A nation can walk on the path of “Unnati” if people of all classes join hands and work for the betterment of the nation. On this same idea, ALMIGHTY has been associated with a unique programme named 'UNNATI' which was organized by The Times Foundation at New Delhi involving children from different social and economic backgrounds.
Greening Activities
To increase the dwindling green cover in the country, we have till date planted approximately 65,000 trees and the survival rate has been approximately 65%.
KUTTAMBAKAM
ALMIGHTY has been promoting self help groups in solving a number of problems related to environmental conditions, solid waste management being the principle amongst them. Infact the self help groups have always been very supportive in solving certain environmental problems of the localities and have contributed very effectively to the better sanitary and cleaner conditions in the locality.
“KUTTUMBAKAM” an all women self help group took birth due to this positive aspect of self help groups. It was formed under the aegis of ALMIGHTY in Delhi. Women of all ages participate in this and various programmes are organized to facilitate their awareness about various issues about which they can make positive contributions. Housewives, working women, single mothers, have been regularly volunteering in this programme.
The volunteers’ further help in raising the awareness levels of the housewives about water conservation, solid waste management and environmental protection. The effort has received overwhelming response and praise from all sections of the society.
SURF EXCEL CHILDREN'S WORKSHOP
Every child has some or the other talent. ALMIGHTY understands the fact that the creativity of the children can be best revealed in open and free surroundings. As a part of the Project Green Mind, ALMIGHTY conducted an environmental workshop during the children festival in collaboration with Surf Excel and The Times of India, at Asiad Tower, Delhi to give light to the creativity and artistic talents of the children.
As, the tagline of Surf Excel says, “Kuchh Daag achhe hain”, hence just to imbibe the need for environmental care in the minds of the children, a workshop was organized for children of all ages. The highlights of the workshop were Pot making, planting saplings, Poster making etc. As some of the best things children learn are learnt out in the open, in the lap of nature, and not in the class rooms, we let the children realize their creativity by letting them be with pots, mud and plants. It was a pleasurable sight to see children from toddlers to teenagers going ga ga over planting their own saplings and carrying them away to care for them. In fact, such was the response that we honestly, ran out of material for all our young patrons. But it was more than made up by the environmental games which were organized to sensitize the young geniuses about nature and environment.
ALMIGHTY organized environmental games, quizzes, plantation, distribution of literature and also demonstrated vermicomposting using a model to the children, who were simply thrilled seeing the earthworms wriggle in the solid waste.
Over 4000 children participated in the workshDuring a 5 day long visit to Tawang in Arunuchal Pradesh the team of ALMIGHTY led by the director heldop. What was most pleasurable was to see children with special abilities taking active part in the workshop. Their million dollar smiles were the most motivating reward which we could have ever asked for.
NATURE ADVENTURE CAMP
“ALMIGHTY” conducted a day long workshop for school children on Nature and Environmental conservation. The workshop was conducted over two days on 14th and 24th June 2010 for 300 children as a part of the army’s western command summer adventure camp for children. It was a pleasure to see so many children from diverse backgrounds, cultures, regions, age and schools to amalgamate as a cohesive healthy group and perform various activities.
The aim of the workshop was to inculcate environmental values amongst children as also to sensitize and educate them on the environmental hazards posed by the use of polythene besides letting the children understand nature in it’s true spirit. The workshop was conducted by the Director ALMIGHTY, Mrs Tripat Parmar.
The days started with all the children gathering in the auditorium and witness a spellbinding presentation on “THE JOURNEY OF POLYTHENE”. The innovative presentation traced the evolution of the polythene and wove a story of a polythene bag which is thrown by a child from his school bus. The ploythene bag, swept into the ocean by rains, creates havoc there and snuffs out life after life in the marine system, as the polythene is not biodegradable.
The biggest challenge today for any hill station is the issue of handling of solid waste which comprises mainly of packaging material due to huge consumption of pre-packaged food and beverages by the tourists visiting these places. The polythene bags not only tarnish the beauty of the hill stations but also cause huge environmental damage.
As the polythene bags are a major part of the solid waste of our household and commercial establishments today, the children were exhorted to think of simple solutions to reduce the menace of the deadly polythene bags as they not only occupy huge spaces without degrading but also end up choking the sewers, drains, storm water drains which leads to various hazards for the civil society.
The presentation cum interaction on the polythene was followed by an interesting informative quiz to give children knowledge on various environmental issues. The quiz has been developed in a story telling form wherein simple story on an environmental issue highlighting certain facts and figures is presented to the children and thereafter few questions are asked to them. The response of the children was simply overwhelming.
Soon after the quiz ended, all the children proceeded to plant a sapling in a pot to be carried by the children with them to their homes with a promise to care and nurture it. Mrs Parmar asked the children to give the planted pot to their best friends as a gift. It was a treat to see the children planting the saplings and exchanging their pots with their friends as a gift of their friendship.
The Director of ALMIGHTY lauded the role of the Indian Army in greening the country. She said very few people are aware that the army is always in the forefront of all greening campaigns and all their cantonments are the greenest and cleanest places in the country. Exhorting the children to be ECO-WARRIORS she said “It is about time that we sit up and take note of the magnitude of the issue of “ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION”. But before we do that we must first understand our role in preserving and conserving what truly is a wonderful gift to humanity. We must realize as to how each one of us can really make a difference to the environment around us”.
In the end the children took a pledge to shun polythene and to preserve the Land, Water and Air and act as didactics to further sensitize those around them in order to create mass awareness.
KID'S CLUB
With a view to promote cleaner and greener environment and surroundings in colonies, ALMIGHTY started a novel initiative in the form of Kid’s Club at the New Friends Colony, New Delhi. In this the children of the locality have been gathering in the local park every Wednesday in the evening, where the volunteers from ALMIGHTY conduct discussion on the ways they can make a difference to the environment to make it better. It is a play-way method of sensitizing the children about environment and get them involved in its upkeep in their locality. Children have planted trees, flowers and maintained the garden to make it look divine. The Kid’s Club has become extremely popular and is being replicated at other places too.
ENVIRONMENT EDUCATION CAPSULE AT PORT BLAIR, ANDAMAN & NICOBAR ISLANDS
Smt Tripat Parmar recently visited Port Blair and had detailed interaction with the student community there. In her interaction she exhorted the students to take it upon themselves to protect the fragile ecology on the islands as also to contribute in educating the masses and tourists in protecting the corals which form the marine wealth of the islands.
It was heartening to see the children speak up for the need to protect the environment.
ENVIRONMENT EDUCATION CAPSULE AT TAWANG, ARUNACHAL PRADESH
During a 5 day long visit to Tawang in Arunuchal Pradesh the team of ALMIGHTY led by the director held a series of lectures for the children of various schools in the district. The children were sensitized on the issues of aforestation, water conservation, conservation of bio-diversity
CONDUCT OF POSTER MAKING AND SLOGAN WRITING COMPTITION ON ENERGY CONSERVATION
ALMIGHTY has been working with children and their teachers in schools in order to raise their levels of awareness on fuel conservation. In a step towards getting the children to express their feelings and expectations on Fuel Conservation through a creative medium “ALMIGHTY”, supported and sponsored by PCRA, conducted the following competitions involving school children during the Oil Conservation Fortnight:-
WORKSHOP ON ENERGY CONSERVATION
Energy is the lifeblood of the human existence, be it in any form like petroleum products, electricity etc. It would not be out of place to say that it is one of the most precious resources today. The per capita consumption in our country is still quite low as compared to the highly industrialized countries like the US or energy surplus countries like Russia and Kazakhstan, but thanks to our huge population and increasing personalized mode of mobility and industrial activity, India is the 4th largest user of commercial energy in the world. Unfortunately, a large portion of energy is wasted – not wilfully but due to lack of awareness amongst the masses. By taking proper care and adoption of good operational practices, energy waste can be minimized and efficiency increased. For this the basic attitude of people needs to change. If the masses have to be made aware of the situation and remedial measures, the efforts must start from the formative years in a child’s life. To achieve this there is an urgent need to train the trainers viz Teachers, Lecturers, Educationists and more so the school teachers who are effective catalysts in shaping the minds of children and youth of today during their formative years.
however there has been neglect on the energy conservation education in the absence of the curricula in the syllabus in schools & colleges. We must learn not to rival nature but to cooperate with it and live in harmony by proper utilization of natural resources of energy like petroleum products. By taking proper care and adoption of good operational practices, energy waste can be minimized and efficiency increased. For this the basic attitude of people needs to change.
Keeping this in mind we have organized training programmes to include seminars for raising the awareness levels of all concerned about energy conservation and strengthening the energy conservation related activities in the schools. We believe that each Teacher so trained will be able to influence the minds of at least 40-50 students in his/her sphere of influence, who in turn will be Didactics to influence the thinking and actions of their families about energy conservation. With this as the background “ALMIGHTY” conducted a one day seminar on Energy Conservation on the eve of National Energy Conservation Day at Indian Institute Of Mass Communication, Aruna Asif Ali Marg, New Delhi with the theme “Energy Conservation – Role of Children”. Educators from over 67 schools attended the seminar. A number of experts from Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA), Ministry of Non Conventional Energy, Indraprastha Gas Limited and Indian Wind Energy association gave presentations to cover various topics related to the theme. Eminent Environmentalists and teachers from selected schools participated in the event.
“Charity begins at home”. Therefore, what better place to begin creating awareness on the state of energy conservation than at home and school. Energy conservation is aimed at achieving multiple objectives of conserving environment and saving public investment. In other words, energy saved means energy produced. In fact, it is not just limited to the government but to every citizen of the country. It is, therefore, necessary for all of us to come together and address the issue as a mass movement, said the Director of ALMIGHTY, Ms Tripat Parmar. Speaking further she brought out the role of citizens in bridging the gap in demand and supply by adopting certain basic energy conservation techniques.
To further highlight the same ALMIGHTY distributed a number of handouts and literature.
The programme ended with all the delegates and participants taking a pledge to conserve energy in whatever way they can and also to motivate and ensure that at least 20 other people followed each one of their example. This is the what ALMIGHTY has been striving for - TO SET IN MOTION A MASS MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE FOR ENERGY CONSERVATION.
TEACHER TRAINING SEMINAR ON HEALTH
“ALMIGHTY” conducted a day long seminar in the auditorium of India International Centre, 40 Lodi Estate, New Delhi with the theme “Environment: Impact On Health of Child Of Third Millennium”.
Children are a vital part of society and are fundamental to its future. They are society's future parents, workers, citizens, and providers of services. The way in which society treats children, provides for their childhood and the extent to which it takes care of their health needs will in a great way dictate the quality of life which these children of today will lead once they grow up. Globally, inadequate fresh or clean water supplies, contaminants and pollutants in the ambient air, exposures to hazardous and unsafe products and poor waste disposal practices are the major causal factors in determining the impact of environment on children's health. As these environmental factors rise, scientific and medical evidence suggests that they are linked to many illnesses in children. The newly emerging environmental health threats significantly add to the current burden of diseases by affecting a child’s immune system.
A lot is being done to improve the environment in which our children live and grow. However there is an urgent need for the society to analyse and address the problem of the negative impact of environmental pollution on the health of children. Since the teachers deal on a day to day basis with children, it is pertinent for them to be aware of the probable solutions to the health problems of the children, on a priority basis. We organized a seminar to highlight the need for raising the awareness levels of all concerned and strengthening the health related activities in the schools in the country. Besides the teachers, experts from the medical and educational fields along with noted social workers attended the seminar Stressing the need to take stock of the situation before it is too late the director of ALMIGHTY, Ms Tripat Parmar, in her inaugural address said that a child’s world centres home, school and local community. These should be healthy places where children can thrive, protected from disease. But in reality it is not so. Globally, inadequate fresh or clean water supplies, contaminants and pollutants in the ambient air, exposures to hazardous and unsafe products and poor waste disposal practices, contaminated food are the major causal factors in determining the impact of environment on children's health. As these environmental factors rise, a growing body of scientific and medical evidence suggests that they are linked to many premature deaths and illnesses in children. She said that the suffering of children because of environmental hazards is not inevitable. There are solutions, most of the environment related disease can be prevented.
Bringing out the gravity of the situation various experts gathered at the seminar stressed that the single largest cause of death for children globally is from acute respiratory diseases that arise from or are by constant exposures to highly polluted indoor and outdoor air (airborne particulates, sulfur dioxide, ozone).
During the seminar almost all the speakers were unanimous in voicing their concern at the alarming rise in water pollution in the country. They opined that urgent steps need to be taken to raise the awareness levels of the populace about sanitation around their residential areas and schools. They lauded the role being played by ALMIGHTY towards this end.
At the end of the seminar a few entrepreneurs who have set benchmarks in eco conscious ways of producing agro based products were honoured by ALMIGHTY.
TEACHER TRAINING SEMINAR ON ENVIRONMENT EDUCATION
“ALMIGHTY”, in association with The Times Foundation, conducted a day long seminar in the auditorium of India International Centre, Lodi Estate, New Delhi with the theme “ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION : RELEVANCE IN THE 21st CENTURY” with the aim to empower the schools and the educators to effectively impart environmental education to the students.
Environmental education is education through, about and for environment and is a way of implementing the goals of environmental protection. It is not a separate branch of science or subject of study. It should be carried out according to the principle of lifelong integral education. Environmental education will not only open our eyes to the havoc we have wrought on ourselves in the form of by-products of the progress attained by us but it will also inform us as to how we can inter wine progress and life so that they exist together. It is high time we realize the need of environmental education in totality and in right earnest. Environmental Education helps understand different food chains and the ecological balance in nature, appreciate how environment is used for making a living and for promoting material culture.
Keeping this in mind we organized a seminar for strengthening the Environmental Education related activities in the schools besides making the educators aware of the various facets of Environmental Education.
WORKSHOP ON ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND CONSERVATION
"ALMIGHTY” conducted a three-day Workshop on Environmental Education in the auditorium of India International Centre, 40 Lodi Estate, New Delhi with the theme “Green the Minds for a Sustainable Society”. This workshop was cosponsored by the World Institution Building ProgrammeM(WIBP) and the Indian Institute of Ecology and Environment (IIEE), New Delhi. The workshop concluded with awards being given to individuals and schools who have done exceptional work in the field of environment.
The workshop was inaugurated by Ms Renuka Chawdhury. In her keynote address, she stressed upon the vital role teachers could play in educating and moulding the minds of the children on environmental issues. She spoke as to how the teachers could sensitize the children about the importance of keeping the environment clean. She lauded the efforts of “ALMIGHTY” in trying to bring about this awareness amongst the masses from the schooling stage itself.
Mrs Tripat Parmar, Director “ALMIGHTY” said that the aim of the workshop was to motivate the teaching fraternity to join the crusade against environmental degradation. “Teachers are important pillars around whom the youth of today is growing and developing and the society expects them to play a larger than life role in shaping the minds of the young and impressionable children to achieve the desired results in environmental protection”, she said.
During the course of the workshop experts discussed the strategies and methodologies to be implemented in the schools to bring about a change in the mindsets of the children of today towards environment so that they grow up to be environmentally conscious citizens as it is often said that children may not be the 100% of the population today but they are 100% future. The delegates had an opportunity to hear and see the presentations of some of the most learned and experienced speakers who hailed from different professions but committed to the cause of environmental care and protection. Renowned Doctors like Dr Pradeep Saxena, CMO, Dr RamManohar Lohia hospital enlightened the delegates about the linkages between health and environment so that when children grow up they are able to appreciate the importance of having a cleaner and greener environment.
ALMIGHTY endorsed the importance of having a natural way of life. The use of natural and herbal products needs to be resorted to and encouraged. Recycling of recyclable waste must be done By this we not only prevent or minimize environmental degradation but also contribute to lessen the burden of thousands of tones of garbage produced every day by our cities. Segregation of waste, Vermicomposting were stressed upon. This was aptly demonstrated by JIVA institute. It was emphasised that the environment education to become a way of life and the subject to be integrated with every subject be it science, maths, art or music. Eco designing ,rain water harvesting and water auditing in schools were also discussed. Ecodesigning for schools would be taken up in a big way in the coming year with the help of Mr Niranjan Khatri GM Wel group.Energy saved prevents degradation of env somewhere in the world. We had a small yet enchanting presentation by Mr R Palhan as to how small innovations in life can lead to large saving of fuel and energy. He had a small presentation on energy saving devices which could be used on daily basis.
Experts from agencies/ngo’s dealing with environment like Intach, Himcon, Development alternatves, Jiva Istitute, Kalpaviriksh, Welcome Group of Hotels along with educationists, medical and water conservation experts discussed issues ranging fron water and energy conservation (the techniques and methodologies), recycling of waste, role of educators in environment conservation and ‘health and environment’.
Concluding the workshop, Smt Parmar said that environment must become a way of life rather than remain a subject to be taught and studied. He lauded the efforts of “ALMIGHTY” towards increasing the awareness levels of the masses towards environmental care and protection.
