"Anyone who can solve the problems of water will be worthy of two Nobel prizes - one for peace and one for science"
- John F. Kennedy
One of the issues which has assumed great importance for all of us today is of FRESH WATER CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT – whether it is the availability of water for various needs of the people and society at large or the management of depleting water resources. Water is the elixir of life. It would not be out of place to say that it is one of the most precious resources today. We require and use water in all the facets of our life.Unfortunately, a large portion of potable water is wasted – not wilfully but due to lack of awareness amongst the masses. All these have assumed alarming proportions. The water table in the cities and villages of the country is falling at a rapid pace, there is no water due to mismanagement of this precious resource in the major parts of the country for the farmers and it is believed that in the year ahead we may face fresh water crisis if adequate and timely corrective measures ranging from educating the society about water usage, water management and conservation, rain water harvesting and other related methods are not taken. Experts have opined if necessary actions are not undertaken for fresh water conservation and management, coming years may well see the declaration of WATER EMERGENCY. Many parts of the country regularly face acute water shortages. It is, therefore, necessary for all of us to come together and address the issue as a mass movement.
Imagine a day in your life when there is no water to use. Not a single drop of water to drink when you come from school or office, nothing to wash hands, utensils, clothes, or even cook. How will you survive in such a situation? This is undoubtedly a horrific imagination. This imagination is likely to turn into a reality if we continue to waste water and use the finite water resources irresponsibly.
It is with this background and understanding, “ALMIGHTY” has been focusing its energies and efforts towards addressing the issue of Water Conservation & Management, which is of prime concern to the society today.
"Water is the basis of life and the blue arteries of the earth! Everything in the non-marine environment depends on freshwater to survive"
- Sandra Postel
Besides availability of water, the pollution of the available water resources is also assuming alarming proportions. Years ago the first civilization was established along rivers by mankind who have always been near water in some way or the other as it is a basic necessity. Water is our life support and it represents the very essence of life. Human beings, animals and plants, all living creatures on Earth require water to live and grow. Life starts from water, nature flourishes with Water, and energy is formed of water. It would be prudent to summarise that water sustains life. However, as a consequence of development and due to the insatiable greed of mankind, the amount of impurities being discharged into water have been adding up and today have reached alarming proportions. One of the basic sustainers of human life – THE RIVERS – around which civilizations have developed and prospered are bearing the brunt of this so called social and economic development.
Seeing the significance of the situation and in order to sensitize the people (specially the children) ALMIGHTY has launched a Project for Water Conservation and aptly named it as “JAL CHETNA”. Under Project “JAL CHETNA”, a campaign has been initiated to raise the level of awareness of the masses about the importance of water conservation.
Water is used for drinking, washing, cleaning and just about any activity we care to do. Without water, mankind’s survival is virtually impossible. To get this message across to a wider cross section of the society, ALMIGHTY is training and motivating the children, teachers and officials of the educational institutions so that they contribute effectively and successfully in this project by being the didactics for carrying the message of water conservation across to the society at large.
In order to bring into light the reasons and solutions of water conservation, ALMIGHTY has developed comprehensive training programmes and adequate literature regarding water conservation and rain water harvesting and has distributed it in over 1700 schools. We have regularly organised various programmes for sensitization of the masses about this issue of prime importance. A few of them are listed below.
Seminar On Water Conservation
“ALMIGHTY” conducted a one day seminar on Fresh Water Conservation on the eve of World Earth Day at Indian Institute Of Mass Communication, Aruna Asif Ali Marg, New Delhi with the theme “Fresh Water Conservation – Role of Educators”. A number of experts from Ministry of Water Resources, Delhi Jal Board, Central Ground Water Authority, Eminent Environmentalists and teachers from selected schools of NCR participated in the event.
Fresh Water Conservation has become the need of the day keeping in mind the Fresh Water Scarcity in most parts of the country. Experts opined if necessary actions are not undertaken for fresh water conservation and management, the coming years may well go down the history as the years of WATER EMERGENCY. Already many parts of the country are facing acute water shortages. It is, therefore, necessary for all of us to come together and address the issue as a mass movement. Speaking on the occasion she brought out the role of citizens in bridging the gap in demand and supply by adopting certain basic water conservation techniques. To further highlight the same ALMIGHTY distributed a number of handouts and literature.
Speaking on the occasion a senior scientist of Central Ground Water Authority, Dr Durjoy Chakraborty stressed on the need for Rain water harvesting to be adopted by the everyone including the schools in the country in a big way. Infact if we in India harvest rain water from just 1% of our land we can meet almost the complete requirement of fresh water.
In the end all the delegates and participants took a pledge to conserve water in whatever way they can and also to motivate and ensure that atleast 10 other people followed each one of their example. This is the what ALMIGHTY has been striving for - TO SET IN MOTION A MASS MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE FOR WATER CONSERVATION.
Release of Documentary on Water Conservation
In May 2015, with an aim to motivate the children to actively take part in water conservation, a Documentary film “Water is Life” made by Amrit Kochar and vidiya Bharti, both Class 12 students of Col Satsangi Kiran Memorial School, New Delhi, was released at a function Held at Chandigarh Press Club by the Director ALMIGHTY. The documentary, made under active guidance of Mr Murali Menon, a renowned Information Scientist and ALMIGHTY, highlights the importance of water conservation as also the need to adopt various practices to save mother earth. The documentary covers the issue of importance of water in life in a lucid and simple manner covering the facets of water conservation, water power, and requirement of water for irrigation besides covering the history of environmental change, challenges being faced today while presenting workable solutions to the stated challenges. The documentary was conceived and made within a week by the children who toiled hard to gather facts and represent them in a manner understandable by their fellow students. The documentary was released at Chandigarh, the city beautiful, as the city has always set up envious benchmarks as far as environmental conservation is concerned.
ALMIGHTY has made endeavours to bring out the role of citizens in bridging the gap in demand and supply of potable water by adopting certain basic water conservation techniques.
Rain Water Harvesting
ALMIGHTY has also launched a concerted campaign to promote Rain Water Harvesting with a pledge to motivate people to install water harvesting structures in their premises, be it residential or institutional. Many schools and residents have come forward and the response is tremendous. Among the notable rain water harvesting projects carried out by ALMIGHTY are the ones at UDYAN GHAR at Narsingpur at Gurgaon and Spring Dales School at Delhi.
ALMIGHTY has also started a sticker campaign on Rain Water Harvesting and stickers are being pasted on cars and buses so that the message reaches to a large cross section of the society.
Drip Irrigation System
Apart from rain water harvesting, ALMIGHTY is also working to popularize the usage of Drip Irrigation Systems and for this, we have been organizing various programmes in schools as also with farmers who are the mass users of water. We feel that drip irrigation holds solutions to the water management for irrigation purpose, to a very large extent.
